Cain shuffled around the mess hall and slid food onto his tray. He stared at his choices and shrugged, heading across the room to a lone table. He sat and ate by himself, the food of little interest to him. He felt a bit cold, but didn’t care. His stomach growled but again he didn’t care.

He pushed the tray away and sighed. Why bother?

A few others gathered in the mess hall to eat. Cain saw Regan come in with her boys. Ingrid joined some other UN officials Cain didn’t know at a table in the far back. Warren and Mara sat together near the food tables, but Cain didn’t see Violet anywhere. He shrugged again and drank some water.

Warren waved to him, gesturing for him to join he and Mara, but Cain shook his head and waved them off.

Regan joined the two scientists instead as the boys teased each other and complained about the taste of their food.

Cain saw her look over and shifted his gaze to his plate of food. After a few moments he heard her step up to his table.

“Hey.” Regan pulled a chair up to the table and sat down. “You know we all showered today so you should come over and eat with us.”

Cain only lifted his head half way. He really didn’t want to make eye contact with her. “It’s not you guys. It’s me. I just want to be alone.”

“If you want to talk about it, I’m here.” Regan reached out and touched his wrist. “We only have each other. All of us.”

He sighed. “I don’t have a place here. I’m useless.”

Regan shook her head. “No one is useless here, Cain. We all offer something.”

“I don’t. I’ve been trying…really I have. Trying to find my place but I just come up with nothing.”

“You’re just not looking deep enough.”

“Oh, I think I am, Regan. It’s nice of you to try to cheer me up, but I’m a burden here. Nothing more. A drain on resources.”

“Stop.”

“Why? I’m nothing but a chickenshit. I see them all the time. Father Mobley, Val, Joe. I see them burning. Hear them screaming in my dreams.”

“I’m sorry. I know that must be hard…nightmarish.” She squeezed his wrist.

“It’s agonizing and I’m afraid. All the time. Afraid one of those fucking things is going to burn me alive. Like falling right into Hell itself. I can’t anymore, Regan, I can’t keep seeing them. So sorry if I feel useless…it’s because I really am.”

Regan cocked her head then slid herself alongside him. She rubbed his back. “No, you’re not and I’ll tell you. There’s something you can start doing for others right now.”

“What?” A hint of hope weaved into his voice. He sat up straight.

“Your skill is your faith,” she said.

“My faith? That isn’t a skill.”

“It is here. Now. You don’t think others are scared? You don’t think people are having nightmares. The world we know is gone. Our cities are in ruins. Everyone is wondering if we’ll ever be safe again.
